You may need to have a tooth extracted for a variety of reasons. Perhaps the tooth is severely decayed or irreparably broken, or advanced periodontal disease has set in. Sometimes certain teeth are poorly positioned (for example, impacted teeth) or need to be removed prior to certain types of orthodontic treatment.
The tooth extraction process
Before booking your treatment, your dentist will examine the tooth or teeth in question, take X-rays, and run any additional tests needed to confirm that extraction is the best solution for your dental situation. If you do need one or more teeth removed, you will be given a local anaesthetic to numb the treatment area and ensure that you experience nothing more than a slight pressure as the tooth is taken out. If you have dental phobia, sedation is available to keep you relaxed and comfortable the entire time.
Tooth extraction is normally an uncomplicated procedure. Sometimes an incision is necessary to make root extraction easier, and on rare occasions bone segments require removal to expose the tooth, but your dental team will ensure that the experience is free of pain.
Extracting wisdom teeth
When wisdom teeth become impacted, problems result. Partial eruption leaves openings around the teeth that allow bacteria to infiltrate and infect the tissue, which in turn can cause:
– Swelling and pain
– Pressure that could cause other teeth to shift about
– Tumours and cysts that destroy healthy teeth and bone tissue
Early removal of wisdom teeth is strongly recommended to avoid such problems and minimise surgical risk.
Prior to your surgery, your sedation options will be reviewed, to help you decide on a method that’s best for your circumstances. After the teeth are removed, your gum is sutured and you will rest in our office under supervision until you are ready to be taken home. We will provide you with a postoperative kit that includes aftercare instructions, a prescription for pain medication, and antibiotics. We will also schedule you for a follow-up appointment to see how you are progressive and remove sutures.
